BD brings the Stoke to the 2014 Damascus Trail Days

Wednesday, September 7, 2016
Black Diamond Sports Marketing Coordinator Holly Hansen reports from the nation's biggest annual hiking festival, Damascus Trail Days in Damascus, Virginia.

A crew of Black Diamond employees recently headed out East to Damascus Trail Days on May 16th-18th. Damascus Trail Days is the largest hiking event in the nation, and each year up to 15,000 East Coast hikers and Appalachian Trail thru-hikers make their way to the small town of Damascus, Virginia for the festival. Trail Days involves an array of offerings for attendees including gear repairs, demos, gear sales as well as camping, arts and refreshments.

Damascus is a beautiful, sleepy little town with a population of about 900 people. But it comes to life around Trail Days. In fact, the event was scheduled around the timing of most Appalachian Trail thru-hikers reaching Damascus, Virginia (about 466 miles into their 2,181 trek). Not only does the trail literally roll through town, but it offers a comfortable place to stay with plenty of amenities. The festival gives trekkers something to look forward to from camaraderie, a hiker’s parade, free food and haircuts to vendor booths with free swag and gear repairs.

The BD booth offered a small collection of display gear for people to see, trekking pole repairs, headlamp and pole replacements and swag (stickers and iphone cases). The BD Stoke Raffle gave away a full trekking setup (apparel, poles, pack and headlamp), with 100% of the proceeds going to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
Despite the unseasonably cold weather, Trail Days was a success as usual—hikers and locals came through at a steady pace; they were psyched on our gear and we returned the stoke with swag, gear repairs/replacements and a friendly crew.
