Rated 1 out of 5 by Kevin from Unbearable high pitch whine I boxed the new one back up and it sits on my shelf. Ended up using gorilla tape and zip-ties to get my original Icon back in commission. The new light has many great features don't get me wrong. It's bright lasts forever. Sweet color array and so many modes you could probably make a landing strip if you wanted. But the flaw I simply could not get over was the incredibly high pitch whine that it makes when on. I really hope this issue is addressed for the next version. I own several black diamond headlamps and they are all superb. Until then I shall only use this when absolutely needed and use my first Icon, which I will add has been used daily for over 6 years. Love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by B from Very powerful, had some reliability issues The Good: - Extremely powerful headlamp, excellent for night hikes/backpacking. - A little on the heavy side (uses 4 AA batteries) but very, very bright. The Not so Good: - Just ordered my 3rd one as the prior two both lasted ~ 1 year, so perhaps some reliability issues with this headlamp. No idea why either stopped working, but just ordered #3. I used the "live chat" and chatted with "Bri" to discuss the reliability issues I'm having and he was very understanding and offered a very large discount on a replacement Icon. Due to this, I'm willing to give it one more chance... If this one dies within 1 year as the other two, then I'll be looking for a different model. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is due to my experience with reliability. A $100 headlamp should last many years.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Mike from Good with one flaw. The good: very comfortable, good light output, three color options, side touch option for max output. The bad: high pitch sound it makes while using it, don't know if it's just my unit (could you check yours and provide feedback?). The sound frequency changes when you dim it. According to some forums it's called inductor whine or microphonics and it's attributed to bad circuitry design but Black Diamond says it's normal. Be aware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Andy from Great Headlamp with Super Bright Light! This headlamp replaces my original Icon headlamp that has seen many adventures and lots of practical use in SAR. The biggest improvement is in the amount of light the new version is able to put out and the addition of coloured night vision modes. Also the addition of the removable battery pack is is a much needed improvement when you consider the weight that it reduces when in use on my helmet. I wish that they would have kept the rechargeable battery option! Overall this is a 9 out of 10!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mikael from Great upgrade from 2015 Icon Polar I used the 320 Lumen version prio to this and the extra lumens really makes it very versatile for running/mtb/paddling. Build quality seems upgraded and the easy to break locking mechanism on the old batterypack is redesigned. I still dont understand how to detach the batterypack from the headband (tried but dont want to apply too much force) and have written to BD support for advice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by T from 3rd Icon This is my 3rd Icon. Main use case is night hiking. - Of course it's brighter than the previous generations. - Feels like the red LED light is brighter though only one LED is used. - carrying belt : well made than Icon polar. - head strap: prefer the older one. - quality of plastic (battery pack and light housing) is better than before. - convenient 'powertap' botton. - the length of power cable is same as before. - the color temp. of white LED is slightly warmer (yellow casting) than before. I want give 6 starts since previous ones are already 5 stars. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by Greg from I liked the the last gen better To begin with this is still one of the best headlamps on the market period. the only thing I have noticed is when the main light is at max brightness it is not has focused of a beam as the last generation, it does not throw the beam as far has the last gen. It does seem to cast more light, kind of brighter, but not as far has my older gen. Side by side with one I bought last year, the new version is not as narrow of a beam and does NOT throw the light as far as the older version, while there is more omni light. I like being able to see farther rather than have more light near and side to side. With the older version shining light in a more focused, tight beam it seems like last years version is brighter even though the new version is brighter on paper. It may be that they changed the lense on the new version, thinking if it was a stronger light it would make up the differance??? I like all the features and I haven't had any problems. I will keep using my last years version for work, it makes a big differance for me seeing further ahead of where i'm going on the job, and I'll use the new one for around the house where more fill, less throw is more useful. So if you want more light fill around you, the new light will work great, but if you need to light things up far away, keep your older version.

Rated 1 out of 5 by SlowFoot from Bright light makes too much loud noise!! This is a replacement from a order model. I am totally Sorry that i replaced it ....I use my headlamp almost every day as i am a caretaker for AMC in White Mountains of New Hampshire....The brightness brings on this really loud humming sound that really drives me crazy...I work in some of the worst weather in the World and dealing now with one of the Worst headlamps ever from Black Diamond, The high pitch noise can drive you nuts.....ugh......
