Rated 4 out of 5 by Jake from A great piece of protection When my Hoody arrived I thought the box was empty. This is one light shell. I purchased it for spring skiing, climbing and mountain biking. I have been impressed by its balance of wind resistance and how well it breathes. As for long term durability I cannot comment. The only reason for 4 stars is the sizing. I'm 5'9" with the torso of someone much taller. If I'd bought a medium like other reviews recommended I'd be in a half jacket. The large is on the verge of being to short for my liking. Other than that it's been an amazing jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dean from Versatile, Lightweight and surprisingly tough I purchased this jacket to for AT skiing and ice climbing in drier conditions. It has exceeded expectations. The Alpine Start Hoody is lightweight and breathable, but cuts the wind nicely. Perfect when paired with a fleece mid layer for high output skiing and climbing in below freezing temps. For colder weather I pair it it with a light insulated jacket and it works great. I was surprised how well the jacket protects against the elements, light snow or water from wet climbs beads and falls off. Hopefully the NanoSphere treatment lasts. Has survived alder/devils club bushwhacks, typical to south central Alaska, unscathed. I'm 6'2 about 185, satisfied with a Large.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Evan from THE climbing shell This is hands down an amazing jacket. Perfect size for stuffing in its chest pocket and clipping to the harness. I have used it on cold mornings with some wind approaching the crag over my hot forge puffy and couldn't really ask for a better 10-20 degree approach combo with some light wind on a steep approach to the climb. I have climbed many chimneys/off widths with this thing and always get to the belay and inspect the jacket expecting to find some holes and have yet to see any wear/damage. The only thing this jacket tore on was a metal burr on the edge of a truck bed that no material would survive. Get this jacket, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by christopher from "Unimprovable" Hello, This Jacket and Company is definitely worth a review. The jacket is so sweet, it's a must, I'd say #1 jacket for backpacking/hiking because of the weight and features. Its stretches, resists rain, wind, and I take it everywhere. It's way better than the houdini because of the stretch and durability, so the price difference is worth it. I have needed Black Diamond's customer service due to a warranty issue and I must say, they are just as easy as Patagonia to complete an after sales issue. 10- Stars-- Black Diamond customer service Max- Stars-- Alpine Start Hoodie Thank you BD, Chris

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tyler from Can see this becoming my favorite layer I just wanted to write some quick impressions (having only used it once), but mainly wanted to comment on the size. I'm 6'2" with average arms and a longer torso. I ordered a Large and it fits great. I appreciate the longer torso cut, as it fits my long torso well. I can easily see this becoming my favorite late spring, summer, and early fall layer. It doesn't insulate much as it breathes SO well. If it's slightly cool outside with a slight breeze, this is the perfect layer. Basically the perfect alpine summer layer. A car-to-car layer, if you will. The hood is fine and articulates well for looking around while climbing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Yan from The shell you'll want on your route This jacket is fantastic. A super light layer that gives you great wind protection and weather resistance for long approches, skinning up your line or to bring with you on multi pitches. I wear it all the time. The fitting is a little more snug that a regular shell, which can be a surprise if you want to put insulation underneath it. You need to pay attention for rock abrasion, since the fabric is so light and thin. Other then that little heads up, this product is a must have if you want to play out in the field. I've used it for touring, climbing, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, well any active outdoor activity!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Quin from Alpine start... and end Put it on in the morning, take it off back at the car. I have brought this along on many days in the mountains and kept it on much longer that I would other jackets. It breathes very well. Or should I say, it actually breathes, unlike many "high output" jackets out there. Packs up well into its pocket, not too big, not too small. I own a handful of other wind jackets and this is my go-to. The fabric is more durable than the others I have had, and I think the trade off for the weight is worth it if you are climbing with it or want it to last longer than other jackets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Danny from Pure awesome. As I finished my first ascent in this jacket that is seriously all I could think. I wore it from our pre-dawn start up the mountain (c. 38 degrees) through the mid-day slog (with a heavy pack, c. 78 degrees) in much warmer weather, and even into to the evening back to the car. I swear I was comfortable the whole time. Light enough I forgot about it. I honestly thought I'd miss the lack of hand pockets, but I didn't think about it once. It sprinkled on us near the end of the day, and while it would never replace a heavier Gore shell, it did what it should.
