How-to Video: Fitting Black Diamond Gloves and Mitts

Mercury Mitts is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mitten My hand circumference is 7 7/8" and length is 7 1/2". The medium was the right fit for my hands; tight enough to work in but enough extra that I can squeeze a liner in if needed. I typically just use the shell over either Powerweight Liner gloves (when hiking if I have to put my hands in the snow) or Punisher gloves (when belaying) (both gloves are a size large). It works really well. The cuffs tighten up well using teeth; I really like how these are designed. The insulated inner of the mitts are the same finger-mitt inner as that of the Soloist Finger glove. If you have the Soloist Fingers with you you can bring just the Mercury shells and save some weight.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as previous model (2013) The gloves keep me warm but are not true to size and fit small. Also, the cuff is not as roomy as the previous which makes it uncomfortable to wear my altimeter watch (essential equipment). Also, the straps that attached the gloves to my wrist are missing on this model and I relied on these while in the back country to prevent snow from entering the mitts while I was using my hands. The warm when wet Primaloft features are a bonus but the new feel of the liner is not as comfortable when compared with the previous model. It also looks like the leather on the palms are not reinforced the way the previous model was and make me question the durability of this product. Bring back the old features! 2013 model was legendary!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good but a couple of issues By all accounts this is a warm mitt and it appears well made. I have two moderate complaints. First, the handy leash that was on earlier versions has been eliminated. The second issue concerns the separation of the forefinger in the liner. It seems to give up more than it offers. The increase in dexterity is minimal over a standard five finger liner. For me the forefinger fit is uncomfortably tight and I have pretty normal fingers. If I don't use that slot and put all five fingers in the larger liner area, this is also too tight. So a mitt with an overall size that should work does not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very warm, on my 3rd or 4th pair I find these gloves to be very well made and warm. And they are warm without being too bulky, so you can hold a ski pole, tighten your pack etc. without needing to take them off. So why the 4 stars? Two things, one minor and one somewhat major. The minor point is that I really don't like the trigger finger. It just makes my index finger really cold. I solve this by ignoring it and putting all 4 fingers into the rest of the mitten. But I would love if they removed that trigger finger, I see no utility in it, it is all downside. The second thing is a bit more major. I find the outside of these gloves last forever, but the inner liner packs down and degrades (the fleece gets thin, worn and stringy feeling). So I end up buying another pair when this happens, but I hate the waste of getting a new pair when only the liner is worn out. If they sold the inner mitts separately, that would reduce waste and give these mittens a much longer life. Please do this BD!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My go to glove and mitten company Great product for decades. Warm hands period. Sizing is inconsistent from redesign to redesign; but easy to figure out with a visit to the store who carries BD. I'm not sure the index finger separation helps dexterity much; but I can't evaluate in a scientific way if that costs me warmth. The soft material on the back of the thumb is the wear item. I wish I could buy new insulation inserts as Primaloft tamps down overtime needing a refresh. Hopefully BD will consider selling insulation inserts separately someday. Thanks BD. I stayed out when others went to the warming hut, shh - don't tell 'em.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm mitten Glad I decided to finally upgrade my mittens. Skied with them when high for day was around 10F. Toes were cold, but not hands. Cuff works well with my ski jacket, and like that I can attach a string for my wrists so I won't lose them off a ski lift. Lining comes out and goes back in easily, and is held in place with a ring of velcro. Seem to breathe well too, since moisture was not a problem, even skiing all day. One feature I don't really understand is the separated index finger in the lining, but I don't put my finger there, and just use it as a normal mitt. I guess the separated finger might be useful if using the liner without the shell.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cold index fingers Bought a few weeks ago. Not bad till about -12 C but any colder and index fingers get really cold. The free index in the liner which is supposed to aid dexterity really doesn't it just makes your finger cold at -30 C. I am thinking of returning them or modifying the liner to do away with this feature. You buy mitts like this for warmth, not dexterity. I would like to exchange the liners for full mitt types if that is possible. I don't recommend these if it's very cold like here in Winnieg.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, Durable, while Dextrous To start, my hands have short fingers and large palms, relatively speaking. I like the new design, with a dense fleece lining in the liner mitt. At first, these did feel tight around the wrist, but when broken in, they are very comfortable. The shell does not breathe as well as it would with a more costly membrane, but it is a capable design, with surprising dexterity for a mitt in its price range. A note on fit, I am unable to fit more than a thin liner in them, but I have had no need to go any thicker down to -30C.
