Backpacker's Editors' Choice Award Review

First Light Hoody is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great puffy for most conditions This is a really great jacket i wanted to try it out in different conditions before i wrote a review, and i gotta say I've been very happy. -Very warm I've worn it in temps from 25-60 degrees and was comfortable never to hot or to cold. -Breathes well i usually have a problem overheating once i get moving but not in this jacket. -Blocks wind very well I've it in around 40kt winds and felt very little bleed through. - Sheds light precip well and did a surprisingly good job in a little heavy rain.(although i would not wear only this in prolonged rain) I'm 5'10" 190lbs (i like to lift) and the large fits well, a little loose and good for layering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Hoodie Ever I bought this hoodie a month ago for a fall backpacking trip in a Desolation Wilderness and it did not disappoint. I wore it every day. It’s so warm, it like someone giving you a hug, it cuts the wind but it breathes really well too. It ended up snowing on us at camp around 8,500 so I slept in it. The hood makes the perfect bivy. Since the trip, I haven’t taken it off. I wear it to the office, fly with it and wear it around the house. I’m wearing it right now writing this review... My only feedback for next years line would be to trim in the hood just a bit so it’s a little less mushroom head for the cool factor. Bravo BD, bravo

Rated 5 out of 5 by from outer midlayer I like two midlayers for cold dry days here ideally an outer one that is tougher and an inner one that is breathable. After a lot of research I chose this as an outer one and it hasn't disappointed. Comfort is good enough for this purpose. I wouldn't want to ski uphill for too long in it, but it's better against wind than most. It repels light precip and tree branches well enough. Fit is on point in typical BD style: good for slim tall people, which I am not but it works for me due to wide shoulders and I like the long torso length. I am 5'11" 180 pounds and got a large. With my mission shell in medium it's a bomber combo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Jacket to Rule Them All I don't normally write reviews, but this jacket is simply amazing. I have a closet full of jackets for all the subtleties in weather conditions and this one immediately became my go-to for a wide range of conditions. Here's why: - Super-warm but not bulky: I can wear this jacket on top of a t-shirt and am comfy in 30 degree temps if I'm moving at all (i.e. walking the dog). It feels as warm as a puffy but is form-fitting and doesn't feel bulky or restrictive. It has a nice "layered" feel. - Sheds light precip: I can't speak to how it performs in a full on rain storm, but it easily sheds light precipitation and does a good job blocking wind. - Trim fit: Finally a jacket that isn't cut for the "Average American". Climbers tend to be lean and this jacket fits trim and seems to have extra long arms. You can climb in this jacket without feeling like a marshmallow. - Looks good: Get this jacket in black and you can wear it to fancy dinners or business meetings and look good doing it. Well done, Black Diamond.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost an epic jacket.... I am 5'8'' and 170lbs. I purchased the medium and the fit is not ideal. This coat is definitely designed for tall and skinny folks. The coat ends up riding up my waste and bunches up. While it doesn't fit me quite right it is still a valuable piece of gear in my eyes. I've had the jacket now for about 6 weeks and I have have used it in the mountains and on the river in the Jackson Hole area. It has kept me warm and is breathable. I ended up getting pretty wet rafting one day and even though it had basically soaked through, this coat still kept me warm. The seam that connects the hood has already started to come apart. I'm hoping this coat proves to be more durable than I am so far noticing. I haven't put it through the ringer at all and a seam is busting....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Put through the wringer. Amazing jacket Chilly days in the Red River Gorge, tough ice climbs in New Hampshire, Dirty cracks in Colorado. Sitting on route in a harness for hours on end taking photos got cold sometimes in the winter. but the first light was perfect when I wasn't moving and wasn't to hot when I was jumaring up my line. This jacket went through it all with me. Very warm and light jacket. Would definitely recommend over any other Synthetic jacket on the market. Even a few down ones.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok but not great This hoody was lighter weight (not as highly insulated/warm) as I expected. Might work for someone who wants something lighter. I have two real issues with this jacket. 1. I am 5'9", 145lbs, on the skinny side. The Medium I purchased was very snug. Not horrible in the body but under the arm pits was very tight and uncomfortable. 2. The hood did not lay flat against the sides of my head. They flared out and air/wind would come right in and actually act like a parachute. The hood is not adjustable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I've been looking for I was looking for a good versatile jacket that would cover a range of temperatures, turn a cold wind, pump out heat when active, keep me from sweating up a storm, but continue to insulate when wet. This is the jacket. I purchased it during the summer, and started wearing it in October when the temp hit the 40s. Now that fatbike season is upon us in Minnesota, I've worn it several times for rides in the woods, as low at 7F. It's perfect. I like the hood, as its roominess means I can pull it up over my helmet if I stop and want to lock in some heat. It really dumps heat well when I'm working, and even though it feels like I'm not wearing much, it is surprisingly warm when I'm standing still. I've ridden ridden through brush and briars, and the shell looks brand new. I'm also surprised how well it has turned light rains. Great jacket.
