BLACK DIAMOND CLIMBING SKINS

GlideLite Mix Kicker Skins is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Work great for long flats and low angle. Work great for their intended use. I bought on pair that I did tear like another review mentions, at the buckle interface, BD sent me a new pair. There is a weakness where the rivets are, but only if you tear them off your skis sideways, like tearing a piece of tape. If you pull them along the ski top to bottom they don't tear or break. I've had the same pair for 4 years now with pretty heavy use, 10+ times a season, they have a lot of life left in them too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a fuller repertoire seem great so far. of course the first time i used them, i actually needed full length skins and forgot them at the base of the hill (apparently i was overly eager to use my kicker skins). but assuming i bring both full and kicker sets on future unfamiliar backcountry trips (and even familiar ones i might say), this completes my skinning needs. i might suggest cutting the corners off the back ends so as to make a sort of swallow tail or even a rounded edge. on steeper sections if you begin to slide back, the skins can tend to bunch up and come unglued. cutting or rounding those corners seems to be what people do to combat that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good These seem to work fairly well on not too steep slopes where you don't need full skins. Three minor concerns: 1. Got only one cheater sheet that is not the full length of the kicker skin. If it were at least the full length, I could cut it in two and fold the skin back on itself with the cheater sheet in between. I don't like to fold it on itself without the cheater as I think it shortens glue life and makes them harder to use. 2. The directions are for full skins, not the kicker skins. 3. No cutter included to trim the skin as is provided with full skins.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great perfomance... but too fragile First: The BD service dept. is great. They replaced my skins in 2 days. I used them for the first time in mixed spring conditions and was pretty impressed with the glide/climb combination, even when steep. Near the end of the tour I removed them for the third time. I had heard they were a bit fragile and that the rivets could pull through the hole in the fabric, so I was quite careful... and a rivet pulled out. I hope it was a quality issue and not design. Will find out soon with my new pair.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A very useful product, but designed incorrectly. Wide kicker skins like these can be used to climb virtually any slope, as long as you're not trying to follow someone else's steep skin track. They are easier to carry and to use than full skins. But, the steel front cap is not bent sufficiently to form a good seal from snow on the front of the skin and a plug of snow will form right on the front. Bend it more, or even junk the cap and straps, use a thin plastic cap and let the glue hold the skin to the ski.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Plate design I have used BD kicker skins for decades. The most recent pair, the metal plate was not quite curved enough which allowed snow to get forced under the plate. Had to take them on a vice an increase the bend. Now they are fine

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have used these for 15 years. Over 300,000 ft up I got mine in 2004 I have ski patroled on them for 15 years in BC and Alpine situations. I would regularly skin up my area peaking in 2009 with over 80,000 vertical feet. When new they would hold on all but the steepest trail and if we had a new snow it would hold even on it ~30%. Not they are old and tired so I use them for mellow BC trail breaking on a pair of alpine twin tips and a telebulldog binding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for moderate terrain. I have the 90mm waist ones and I was impressed at how steep I can skin. Super easy on and off and light enough to stash in my coat. I haven’t had any issues with snow build up but I have only used them in super cold conditions. It looks like I could bend the metal river piece a bit more and it would be more flush to the ski bottom. A great choice for moderate slopes.
