Pro Tip: Joe Grant On The Distance Carbon Z Trekking Pole

Distance Carbon Z Trekking Poles is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Compact but flimsy and breaks My husband and I are avid Trail Runners logging around 30 to 40 miles per week. We recently ran a section of the Appalachian Trail near Annapolis Rocks. My Z poles were great for most of our run, but by the and I noticed they were getting loose and seemed extra flexible. When I got home I noticed one of the polls had a crack in the carbon. I am disappointed in my purchase of such an expensive piece of gear that doesn’t seem to last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from used and abused as a wading staff I bought a pair soon after they came out, and still going strong. I use them as wading staffs, have fished with them around the world in salt and river. On the river they get quite a bashing (I applied PVC tape around the bottom 10 inches to protect the epoxy surface). I've had them wedged between rocks, fallen on them, and many times they have prevented me from a swim. The pole I use most is onlynow starting to rust in the locking pin - not bad after 5 years of salt and river misuse, never drying them out. WD40 fixes it though. The pole fit nicely in a simms neoprene staff holder on your belt. Simms now make a carbon equivalent, released several years after the Z poles came out.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Light but not strong Had one of these snap on a trail run. I’ve had several pairs of poles in the past. While these are by far the lightest, they also seem to be the most fragile. They simply aren’t reliable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, nimble, strong I run a lot in mountains, and use the poles for anything from steep skyrunning races to 100-milers. Now, I only use the poles when I need to as I prefer to run free - but the Z poles are closest thing to having nothing. It very easy to store them in front on most packs - just need to add a couple of elastic cords. They are very strong, I have used some for 300,000m of ascent - really no idea how could people break them unless maybe if you have a very big backpack and balance issues ? It is important however to grease them a little for every new season. Personally I find the non-Carbon version is a bit smoother on rocky terrain, but the Carbon are fine as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lightweight but not strong The poles are lightweight but both my wife and I broke one pole on our first day walking with them. These are best reserved for non-technical walking on relatively flat surfaces, or buy a stronger set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved My Bacon!!! I think it's fair say B.D. changed the game when they brought the carbon fiber, compact collapsible trekking pole to market, and the Carbon Z represents a fine-tuned, refinement in that original genius idea. These are probably the best trekking poles in the world, and they've saved my butt countless times on technical scree slopes and dry glacier crossings in places like Pakistan and Patagonia. Best of all they are super light so there is no excuse not to bring them. I keep a pair in my paragliding kit in case I'm faced with a long hike out, and they are amazingly durable for how minimal they are. GET SOME!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful These aren't mere poles, they're mountain tools. Cut one mini basket off and it's a great tool for avoiding crevasse falls (probing ahead of you, crevasses suck). When staggering around in the bush they're a great tool to stay upright, very useful to preserve your dignity and skin. I use them for rockies choss approaches too. They've done hundreds of vertical kilometres to alpine climbs and paragliding launches, then fold down and go in the pack to fly off or descend. I have three sets so I can lend them to guests. I've given them to my dad and other family members, just great tools. I once stabbed a charging bear with one, and it didn't break. I made the last part up, rest is truth. I

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Carbon Zs!! I use my Distance Carbon Z poles for everything from short, steep mountain runs to super long, rugged multi day adventures. The carbon shaft keeps the pole light and stiff for swift uphill movement and helps dampen some of the impact on the downhills. Being able to collapse the pole is a huge advantage when needing to stow them on technical terrain or when traveling. You can adjust the tightness of the locking mechanism with the small toggle on the inside of the lower shaft and easily replace or remove the hand straps depending on personal preference. For the weight and stiffness you’ll be hard pressed to find a more durable pole on the market. The Distance Carbon Zs are the best poles for my needs!
