How-to Video: Fitting Black Diamond Gloves and Mitts

Soloist Finger Gloves is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Long and narrow fingers These are longer and skinnier compared to other BD gloves. I trimmed the high loft fleece in the liner to fit my fingers; too narrow otherwise. For comparison, the BD lightweight liner fits me perfectly; XL Punishers are a little tight in the fingers but the proper length. No leather on the outside of the index finger where you grip things against the thumb. Weak spot. Webbing strap is unnecessary / bulky; elastic in the shell would be better. Otherwise well done. Not quite there, in terms of the durable minimalism it's shooting for, but better than other brands' more complicated attempts at a warm lobster glove. I look forward to wearing these out so I can replace them with a hopefully updated pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little bulky but good tradeoff for warmth Lots of good insulation. I look forward to stuffing my fingers in them at the top of a pitch. Fits right at size (I wear a medium) and I can also squeeze all four fingers into the mitten section when it's really cold. As one reviewer mentioned, more of a mitten than a glove. I use them for belaying and following but wouldn't use them to lead anything stiff -- just doesn't the precise dexterity for clipping a quick draw, etc. Anything bigger and I wouldn't feel confident in holding & swinging my ice tools. The separate index finger does help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic glove I bought these for my winter field work in northern Alaska where temps were regularly -20 to -40 F. My hands were always warm in these. These are the perfect balance between dexterity and warmth. I could do almost all of my fiddling with wires and cables in these and when I was snow machining, I would slip my pointer finger in with the others and then they functioned as mits. So far I'm really happy with these and am excited to try them out next year for ice climbing. I have small hands and the XS fit great with enough room to put all four fingers into the mit section.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good hybrid I wear these belaying ice climbing. I got them as a middle ground between warmth and dexterity. Overall I'm very happy with how they performed and I will keep wearing them. To me, these feel more mitten-like than glove-like. They're a little bulky. My hands always stay warm with them on, and it's harder to work rigging with these vs gloves. That being said, I like the trade-off and I'm going to keep using them. The only thing I would change is to wrap some leather around the side of the finger facing the thumb. Like the other reviewer, I think this is a weak spot if you belay or rappel in them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Protects from mild cold and minus temperature snow Plusses: -liner easy to remove and set to dry -long enough fit to protect over the jacket sleeves -wind protection very good, i use for winter cycling -spacious enough for additional or own replacing liner from wool fro colder weather -hard wearing materials, seem to last even normal day to day use carrying firewood etc not just a marketing speach Minuses: -the liner naturally looses its warming feature after prolonged use, it doesnt expand again to original thickness, so if you use it -10C be sure to have additional liner/glove to put in when the original insulating material is flat 3mm thick. I recommend wool -waterproofing not for rainy days or watery situations, lets the water in from seams, i tested this when canooing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm, versatile and dexterous (as described)! I've so far been very pleased with the performance and fit of the soloist finger glove. Having worn them in the dry/cold of the Western Montana and wet/warm of the Western Oregon snowpacks, they are now my go to for insulation and water repellency. A great choice for snow observations; where warmth and hydrophobia are key while digging and poking around in a pit, as well as finger dexterity in articulation of tools. They manage straps and buckles well, and while I haven't yet run a rope over the palms, they seem quite durable (yet supple) and well-stitched. The outer shell +/- a thin liner works well for warm weather, full liner/shell for the cold. While they don't mention them in the description or show them in the photo, (maybe a no-brainer, but) they do have elastic cuff cinches!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good in the cold My hand circumference is 7 7/8" and length is 7 1/2". The medium was the right fit for my hands; tight enough to handle tools and tie a knot (slowly) but enough extra that I can also use a liner in it if needed. I've seen folks lead with similar finger gloves as well. My fingers typically run colder than the other folks I'm climbing/skiing with, but these have always kept my fingers warm or, if needed, warmed them up when they got cold. I'm a big fan of these; would buy them again in a heartbeat. The liner for these is the same as that of the Mercury Mitts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from If warmth is your primary concern, get mittens Having already lost finger tips, I am pretty choosy about gloves and I just never could keep my hands warm in these gloves. 10F is about as low as I would go with these. I have an older pair of mercury mitts that are way warmer. I also don’t care for the pile fleece that’s being used in the new styles of soloist and mercury mitts. It just feels icky on your skin. These are otherwise well made and designed gloves that may work for a lot of folks. I used these primarily for xc skiing and fat biking.
