Pro Tip: Joe Grant On The Distance Carbon Z Trekking Pole

Distance Carbon Z Trekking/Running Poles is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from used and abused as a wading staff I bought a pair soon after they came out, and still going strong. I use them as wading staffs, have fished with them around the world in salt and river. On the river they get quite a bashing (I applied PVC tape around the bottom 10 inches to protect the epoxy surface). I've had them wedged between rocks, fallen on them, and many times they have prevented me from a swim. The pole I use most is onlynow starting to rust in the locking pin - not bad after 5 years of salt and river misuse, never drying them out. WD40 fixes it though. The pole fit nicely in a simms neoprene staff holder on your belt. Simms now make a carbon equivalent, released several years after the Z poles came out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Compact but flimsy and breaks My husband and I are avid Trail Runners logging around 30 to 40 miles per week. We recently ran a section of the Appalachian Trail near Annapolis Rocks. My Z poles were great for most of our run, but by the and I noticed they were getting loose and seemed extra flexible. When I got home I noticed one of the polls had a crack in the carbon. I am disappointed in my purchase of such an expensive piece of gear that doesn’t seem to last.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Light but not strong Had one of these snap on a trail run. I’ve had several pairs of poles in the past. While these are by far the lightest, they also seem to be the most fragile. They simply aren’t reliable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Broke First Use in Mountains I had used these for ultramarathons a few times. Lighter usage. First trip to the mountains and I snapped one off below the handle on a rocky descent. Definitely not very strong. BD wouldn't replace or sell me a single pole and offered me only a discount on BD gear. Disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from .66lbs (300g) of perfection! Ok after being disappointed by other budget carbon poles failing and slipping down while running (telescoping poles) I knew it was time to upgrade. Wish I did it earlier, these featherweight fixed poles are perfect! The cable inside is plastic coated so it doesn’t rattle inside like other brands do. They make my adventures much more enjoyable. I’m a 5’9” 170lb male and bought the 120cm with a three year warranty. Pros: -.66lbs/300grams!!! (120 cm) -super quick and easy set up/fold up -no slippage due to fixed length -comfortable foam grip -grip is ventilated -grip extends for holding lower on climbs -basket attaches to pole when folded -adjustable straps -plastic coated cable -come with Velcro wrap -look awesome -work well with BD trekker and Mont Blanc gloves -two different tips included -confidence inspiring fixed size Cons: -None found

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, nimble, strong I run a lot in mountains, and use the poles for anything from steep skyrunning races to 100-milers. Now, I only use the poles when I need to as I prefer to run free - but the Z poles are closest thing to having nothing. It very easy to store them in front on most packs - just need to add a couple of elastic cords. They are very strong, I have used some for 300,000m of ascent - really no idea how could people break them unless maybe if you have a very big backpack and balance issues ? It is important however to grease them a little for every new season. Personally I find the non-Carbon version is a bit smoother on rocky terrain, but the Carbon are fine as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need for speed Get a grip...on these comfortable and just really awesome all around use poles. I've been abusing them all summer on peaks, packs, car trunks and no breaks so the carbon fiber isn't something to worry about being fragile. My downhill running game is definitely stronger with these in my hands Thanks BD for designing these!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome (but a couple updates needed please!) I love my Distance Carbon Z poles and would buy another set in a heartbeat, even though I average breaking one of them every 500-1000 trail miles. I’ve broken 3 so far, but they are still the best pole out there for ultras and trail running on steep terrain (up and down). But, please do 2 things, Black Diamond: - Eliminate the useless “shaft catcher” cut out on the basket: • It only works as intended for maybe the first 50 miles the poles are used, after which it is always so deformed and widened by rocks and rough terrain that it no longer will hold the shaft tight when the pole is folded, and only snags on clothing, roots, rocks and whatever else it’s pints grab on the trail—a useless feature. - Make the baskets interchangeable: • it would be awesome if you could change out the baskets for snow baskets so the poles could work Year round for snowshoeing and post-hiking in winter. • Worn baskets could also be changed out (where now, if they fail, the lowers section of the pole must be replaced as it’s all one piece and the cord is anchored into the inside of the basket that holes the pole taunt...I blew a basket coming down Timp and my whole pole collapsed on me and became useless for the rest of the descent.) Thanks!!!
