Above the Rjukanfossen, the valley is open and wide, cradling a playground for ice climbers of all abilities. Of the many areas in the gorge, Krokan is the most friendly: Here, moderate WI 3 topropes sit beside WI 4 pillars and the M10 testpiece, Fission. Less than ten minutes from the parking lot, one might even see the sun here in February—a rarity in a town that, in 2013, built a massive set of mirrors to reflect sunlight down into the town square. Host to the annual Rjukan Ice Festival each February, Krokan is a first stop for visiting climbers from around the world.
