"Seemed almost too grippy on first use, not certain if this was user wrror or not…"
"Great product for great price"
"I have used SO MANY belay devices in my time climbing, When Im not on a multi pitch This is by go to not auto breaking belay device. (I do mainly use the grigri 2 though) Its a very good belay device for beginners or people with a smaller budget. A great device for gym and crag. Note: Its not the best when It comes to multipitch."
"This is definitely a step up from the basic ATC. It has so much friction that I have to hold my rope UP to let people down quickly enough. Great job, BD!"
"I have many different devices including a typical ATC, and a assisted braking device. The ATC-XP is by far the best belay device I have. I use it almost everyday from instructing friends on how to belay, scouts and using my self. This device is very sturdy and hard wearing, considering how much use it has got it is still like new (part from some cosmetic scratches). I prefer the ATC-XP over the bug due to the groves which allow extra friction when belaying heavier people. Excellent device. Will definitely buy another one when my one eventually wears out or I lose it."
"ATC is very smooth, great tool to have in your kit!"
"The ATC-XP is an excellent belay device that is particularly good for frequent users. Unlike the grigri or other belay devices that use assisted braking, the ATC-XP is beginner-friendly. It enforces good belay technique and the friction mode facilitates ease of use for smaller belayers. The friction mode also helps to prolong the life of the device. From a programmatic standpoint, the XP could use a few more color choices to improve color-based equipment tracking. It would also be awesome if Black Diamond made an XP out of steel, instead of aluminum, although I realize that that does not match the majority of the market. However, for educational and industrial usage, in which weight is not a concern, but durability and longevity is, a steel ATC would be a game changer. The increased durability and the reasonable price tag are why my outdoor education company is switching to the XP as our preferred belay device, and I recommend it to anyone looking for the next step in their belay/rappel devices."
"Rope moves thru easily yet when braking the "teeth" give just a bit of extra tension. Love it. Highly recommend it."
